![]() Murray was born into a working-class family in Scotland and left school at fourteen. The majority of The Surgeon of Crowthorne is concerned with the backgrounds, motivations and personalities of Murray and Minor, and of the relationship between them. Unfortunately this is also the smallest part of the book, so while we get a feel for the awe-inspiring work it was, we only get a brief taste of the more than seventy years it took to create the first edition. So one very important thing you get from this book is a sense of just what an incredible achievement it was to create the OED. ![]() Minor.īefore I started reading this book, I’d never truly considered just how much work went into compiling a dictionary. ![]() This book is partly a history of the writing/compiling/creation of the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) and partly a biography of two of the men intimately connected with its creation, the main editor of the OED, Professor James Murray, and a major contributor, Dr W. ![]()

![]() My biggest complaint with The Fiancee Farce was the insta-love. ![]() I mainly picked this one up because of the cover, and the hype surrounding this book (also need to stop going for hyped books, but my FOMO can’t help it!). I do not think I have ever read a contemporary romance novel where I have been surprised or gasped out loud at some reveal. The meet-cute/ insta love, then the lusting after someone you met 2 days ago, then the third act breakup, and then the happily ever after. ![]() My main issue is concerning how formulaic they all are. ![]() Someone needs to slap me every time I add another contempt romance novel, because how many times do I need to be taught the same lesson?! It’s almost like I want to torture myself and write scathing reviews because I rarely end up like this genre. When children read for pleasure, when they get “hooked on books”, they acquire, involuntarily and without conscious effort, nearly all of the so-called “language skills” many people are so concerned about: they will become adequate readers, acquire a large vocabulary, develop the ability to understand and use complex grammatical constructions, develop a good writing style, and become good (but not necessarily perfect) spellers.
